Ondar Kongar-ool (Конгар-оол Ондар) is a Master Tuvan throatsinger and a former member of the Tuvan Parliament. Born in 1962 near the Khemchik River in western Tuva, he is considered a living treasure by the Republic.
In the United States, he is best known for his role in the documentary Genghis Blues, in which he plays host to the American blues musician Paul Pena whom he has invited to Tuva to compete in the throat singing contest.
Ondar is currently musical director to the Tuvan ensemble Alash.
Discography
In January of 1999, Ondar released his solo album, Back Tuvan Future with guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Randy Scruggs, and Bill Miller. The first track, Tuva Groove, was remixed by several prominent DJ's and released as a maxi-single. The album is far from traditional, venturing into Hip Hop, Trip Hop, bluegrass and New Age. The tunes are folk in origin, but the names have been changed accommodate Western translation/tastes.
