One day, the two wolves had gone to look for something to eat, but it so happened that no food could be found. As they were walking like that, they came upon a large herd of horses.

Shaman Wolf said: 'Let's catch and eat one of these.'

Upon which Scholar Wolf said: 'One can't eat these, let's find something from another place and eat that.'

Shaman Wolf said: 'I have become hungry and thirsty, wouldn't it be nice to eat a barren mare from these, and go to the taiga and lay down for a quiet nap?' and he ran towards a black barren mare within the herd.

Shaman Wolf and Scholar Wolf attacked the black barren mare and killed it and started eating.

The story ''Shaman Wolf and Scholar Wolf'', told by the old storyteller Monggush Khürgül-ool Sazyg-Khunaevich (born in 1908) of the sovkhoz "Süt-Khöl" [Milk-Lake] in Aldan Maadyr in the district Chöön-Khemchik, was written down by the tractor driver Ondar Darys of that locality.
