Soyoŋ - Ïr

One of the first scholars to record the languages of the various Turkic speaking peoples living in southern Siberia was Wilhelm Radloff, who between 1859 and 1870 traveled the region extensively. During a four day visit to the Soyon people of remote Kara Köl (in what was then China), he collected two tales and four songs.

These were published in the first volume of his ten volume series of Turkic texts, Proben der Volkslitteratur der türkischen Stämme (1866-1907); they were provided with a German translation.

Radloff employed a Cyrillic based alphabet with some additional graphemes. In his notation he made several phonetic distinctions that are not observed in contemporary orthography, e.g. he discerns between ä and e, l and ł, g and ğ, k and q, and č, ď, and ť; furthermore he notes a vowel with following y as a diphthong (e.g. ai, ïi, here transcribed as ay, ïy).

Several words cannot be found in the modern Tuvan dictionaries, nor in Radloff's own four volume dictionary of Turkic languages, and may be typical of the dialect of Kara Köl.
