Igil

The igil is a bowed instrument. It is related to the Mongolian morin khuur. It has two strings that are composed of many strands of horsetail hair. One string contains about a third less strands than the other. Tuvans have been using nylon fishing line as a modern replacement for the horsetail hair. The soundbox is carved in an ovoid shape with skin covering the top. There is a peg that gets inserted into the soundbox that touches the underside of the skin and the bottom of the box. It is usually placed somewhere nearby the bridge.
